• Manual Safeties: MCK units are not compatible with handguns that feature external manual frame safeties (such as specific M&P or Ruger variants) because internal clearances prevent proper operation.
• Backstraps: Large aftermarket backstraps or extended beaver tails block the horizontal clearance required for the rear hatch door to latch securely and must be removed.
• Ambidextrous Slide Releases: If your handgun has an ambidextrous slide release, it may have issues fitting inside the MCK Chassis. 

External Safeties & Large Grip Modifications

Installing your handgun into the Micro Conversion Kit (MCK) should be a smooth, satisfying process. However, if your firearm features aftermarket external safeties or oversized grip/beavertail modifications, you might have issues.

This guide walks you through how external safeties and grip modifications interact with your MCK, how to check for proper fitment, and what steps to take for a seamless setup.

1. External & Manual Safeties

The MCK is precision-engineered to lock tightly around standard factory slide serrations and frame dimensions. When a handgun features a manual or external safety (such as factory thumb safeties on select S&W M&P models, Sig Sauer pistols, or aftermarket safety levers), space inside the enclosure can get tight.

What to Expect

• Factory Manual Safeties: Many MCK models are designed to accommodate standard factory manual safeties. However, the safety lever must remain in your preferred operating position prior to seating the handgun.
• Aftermarket Safety Levers: Oversized or wide aftermarket safety levers may rub against the interior wall of the MCK cavity, preventing the handgun from seating fully forward.

Safety Warning: Never force your handgun into the MCK if you feel binding around the safety lever. Forcing the firearm can engage or disengage the safety unintentionally or damage the internal housing.

2. Grip Modifications & Backstraps

The rear gun door of the MCK relies on a clean, exact lockup against your handgun’s beavertail and grip frame. Altering the dimensions of your grip can impact how the rear door closes.

Factory Interchangeable Backstraps

• Small & Medium Backstraps: Compatible with almost all standard MCK models out of the box.
• Large & XL Backstraps: Extra-large factory backstraps extend the rear profile of the frame. In some models, this added thickness prevents the MCK rear capture door from clicking shut cleanly.
• The Fix: If the rear door won’t latch easily, swap down to the Medium backstrap. The MCK’s ergonomic chassis provides plenty of grip surface, so you won’t lose control or comfort.

Aftermarket Grip Accessories

• Rubber Grip Sleeves (e.g., Hogue Wraps): Must be removed prior to installation. Rubber sleeves add bulk and friction, preventing the frame from sliding smoothly into the chassis rails.
• Grip Tape & Aggressive Stippling: Thin grip tape (like Talon Grips) generally fits fine. Extremely thick custom stippling or bulky epoxy modifications can increase frame tolerances, making insertion stiff.

3. Quick Compatibility Checklist

Before sliding your firearm into your MCK, run through this simple 4-step check:

• [ ] Strip the Grip: Remove any slip-on rubber sleeves or oversized grip extensions.
• [ ] Check the Backstrap: Ensure a Small or Medium backstrap is installed.
• [ ] Verify the Safety Position: Ensure any manual safety lever clears the internal channel without obstruction.
• [ ] Inspect the Charging Handle: Ensure your charging handle engages the slide serrations evenly without touching aftermarket frame additions.

4. How to Test Your Fitment Safely

1. Unload & Clear: Triple-check that your firearm is completely unloaded with no magazine inserted and the chamber empty.
2. Align & Slide: Lock the charging handle onto the slide, align the frame with the lower rails of the MCK, and gently slide the handgun forward.
3. Listen for the Click: Close the rear lock door. It should click firmly into place without requiring excessive force.

Pro Tip: If you have to put your body weight into closing the rear door, stop! Re-check your backstrap size and ensure no grip accessories are obstructing the latch mechanism. Some MCK’s will require some force to close, but nothing extraordinary.
